Luca Bracali

Luca Bracali (born in Pistoia, April 12, 1965) is an Italian photographer, film maker and explorer
== Biography ==

Luca Bracali was born in Pistoia on 12 April 1965 and began his career in photography and journalism in 1986 and, as a reporter for various sports magazines, followed the motocross world grand prix, moto GP and then formula 1.
During his career as a journalist he has written many articles for Travel, Culture and Tourist magazines; he has published five books (Storia Illustrata di Pistoia, I colori del viaggio, SOS Pianeta Terra, A rose is a rose is a rose, Alba Gonzales) and has been awarded four International prizes for photography and reportage. In 20 years of reportage he has been able to travel to 134 countries.
Luca Bracali is closely involved with environmental issues, such as ice-melting and Global warming as can be seen from the photos he has taken in the Antarctic and Arctic regions. Through photographic projects he has collaborated with polar researchers from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks and the Barneo Ice Camp, which was the starting point for a Ski Eco-Expedition to the geographic North Pole in 2009. Thanks to these Polar expeditions, broadcast on more than forty radio and television programmes, he was able to become a member of APECS () (Association of Polar Early Career Scientists).
Since 2010 his pictures have been exhibited in museums and galleries in Fabriano, Pietrasanta, Rome, Sofia, Kiev and New York, showing his own particular way of conceiving a photograph: a geometric composition of saturated colours where light plays a fundamental role.
In February 2011 he made his debut as a television presenter on Fuoriporta, a travel and adventure programme on Sky satellite and he became a teacher of photography for Canon. In that same month he was one of the first people to be allowed inside the Svalbard Global Seed Vault on the Svalbard islands. Then he began working with RAI 2, in particular with Tg2 and Tg Storie (), mainly working on features about Arctic exploration. In May he received two major awards at Glanzlichter (), one of the most famous international photography competitions, one First Prize and a special mention.
At the same time he took part in two exhibitions: The First Biennale di Montone (PG) and a personal exhibition in Piazza Nettuno, Bologna. In November he became director of the television programme Easy Driver on RAI 1 ().
In 2011 Bracali has launched a project called Planet Explorer () creating a kind of media communication on the web with a live-tour told through photos and videos. The first edition had Iceland as a scenery; the second one, in 2012, the South Africa, the third one, in 2013, the US Western National Parks and the fourth one and fifth one, in 2014, Greece and Morocco.
In 2012 Bracali worked as a director on “Un Giro per la Vita”, the first Eco-Tour made for Porsche with a hybrid car, touring along the Italian coastline. Two exhibitions at the National Art Academy in Kiev (in conjunction with the European Football championship) and at the Ethnographic Museum in Lviv launched the exhibition “Ecosystems”, organised by the Italian Embassy as a travelling exhibition in the Ukraine. In March and November Bracali organised two Arctic expeditions to report on the phenomenon known as the aurora borealis, in a year of strong solar activity.
In October an exclusive reportage on the restoration of the Moai in the Easter Island was published in the National Geographic magazine.
At the end of November he signed the cover photo of L’ultima Thule, Francesco Guccini’s latest album.
In December Bracali was awarded the honorary title of “World Ambassador for Camaiore” by the Camaiore Town Council, because of his work aimed at promoting this area.
In 2013 Bracali is committed in India, documenting the history of the Asiatic lion, to the brink of extinction. In May, he is the guest of the CNR Italian Arctic Station “Dirigibile Italia” in Ny-Ålesund, to narrate how the processes of urbanization and industrialization affect the climate and melting ice. The next month he goes to the Atacama Desert, to reach the ESO astronomical observatory, the Very Large Telescope at Cerro Paranal, then to move up to 5,100 meters of altitude at Chajnantor, where 66 radio-telescopes A.L.M.A. Atacama Large Millimeter Array represent the largest astronomical project on Earth. He is chosen as a testimonial from Fujifilm at the European level and produces four exhibitions in Ukraine. At the end of the year, he releases his fourth book, "A rose is a rose is a rose" published by Mondadori, a report on the history of the oldest family of rose breeders.
In 2014 Bracali attends three Arctic expeditions to document the aurora borealis and polar bears migration in light of the recent climate changes; he visits Mongolia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos to photograph hunters with eagles and ethnic groups of Indochina. The story on the biggest radio telescopes of ESO and Alma is published by National Geographic and the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge gave the name “Luca Bracali” to the 198.616 asteroid discovered. He released his fifth book dedicated to the works of Alba Gonzales, well known Italian sculptor. His works on the aurora borealis and planet Earth are exposed in Copenhagen, Montreal and New York.
